Empowering Communities to Monitor and Protect Waterways

Imagine a digital space where anyone can explore local, community-driven environmental efforts, where data transforms from numbers on a screen to a catalyst for positive change, and where valuable information is accessible to all. This is the vision behind the Community-based Monitoring (CBM) Portal and the Community-based Freshwater Monitoring (CBFM) website: platforms designed to empower communities with the knowledge and tools they need to make a difference.

Thanks to startup support from the ‘Wai Connection – Tatai Ki Te Wai’ project, we’re creating an innovative online hub with two essential services. The CBM Portal will serve as a directory, helping communities across Aotearoa locate other websites that support community efforts to improve values in terrestrial, marine/estuary, and freshwater environments. The CBFM website, our main focus, goes beyond simple citizen science data storage—it’s designed to be a centre for learning and inspiration, where communities not only track their freshwater data but gain insight into what it means, enabling them to take informed action.

A Partnership to Strengthen Citizen Science

In partnership with Datacom, EOS Ecology is developing the CBM Portal and CBFM website to support community catchment groups in their efforts to improve local environments across Aotearoa New Zealand. Rather than duplicating existing resources, these sites are designed to complement and build on other online efforts. The CBFM website, in particular, builds on the national CBM QA framework that gives guidance on how to develop and implement a freshwater monitoring programme following best practices. Where possible, our site will also connect community-based monitoring with Council monitoring efforts, while providing a community space to share stories, celebrate successes, and inspire further action.

A Clear Path to a Game-Changing Platform

We’ve completed a scoping phase for the CBFM website and are ready to create a ‘proof of concept’ site to showcase its functionality and impact. This initial phase provides both cost clarity and a way to demonstrate the site’s value, enabling future refinements and expansions as additional funding becomes available.

We’re still in the early stages of this journey—gathering support, seeking funding, and laying the groundwork for a transformative tool in environmental stewardship. Whether you’re a potential supporter, a community leader, or simply someone passionate about healthy waterways, we invite you to join us in empowering communities to protect and restore our freshwater resources.
